A double-blind placebo-conhtroled study of Ebastine against perennial allergic rhinitis.
Ebastine, 4-diphenylmithoxy-1- [ (3-94-tert-butylbenzoyl)-propyl] piperidine, is a potent H1 antihistamine. Using a double-blind placebo-controlled study design, a clinical study was carried out over two weeks during 1992, in order to assess the efficacy and tolerability of oral ebstine (10mg;/day) in 70 patients suffering from perennial allergic rhinitis. Among 70 patients, 38 and 21 patients were evaluable, in ebastine group and placebo group, respectively. Ebastine was more effective than placebo against symptoms of nasal d3rops, blocked nose, sneezing, itching nose and anosmia at completion (p<0.001).The investigdators¡¯ overall assessment of efficacy, comprising excellent and good, was 74% in the ebastine group and 29% in the placebo group while patient¡¯ overall evaluation of efficacy was 86.7% in ebastine group and 42.8% in placebo group. Ebastine caused few adverse events, none of which resulted in withdrawal of patients from the treatment. In conclusion, ebastine (10mg/day) is an effective and well tolerated for the treatment of perennial allergic rhinitis.
